Pastoral Care

Vision

A caring and safe environment in the school where pupils are happy, well-balanced and are motivated to give of their best.

Mission

To promote the social emotional well-being and character development of all pupils so as to nurture confident, resilient and effective individuals..

Character Development

Character development is crucial to the holistic development of our pupils. At OLGC, we are consciously working to develop our pupils academically, morally, socially and emotionally. Our pupils have one period of Character Development lesson a week. We have embarked on the "You Can Do It Programme" which incorporates SEL, values as well as Habits of Mind to develop positive mindsets in our pupils. Our teachers have also been given the training to deliver the lessons.

Our teachers are put into teams to promote the school's values once a month. To internalize values, our students do reflections on their kind deeds during CME periods. They also post their reflections in forums in our E-Learn portal to further inspire others.

We are providing many opportunities for our students to internalize and practise the skills and values learnt. Our bigger girls learn to mentor their younger sisters through the Adopted Sisters programme, the P1 buddy programme as well as the Reading Sisters Programme. All our students learn to care for their environment through maintaining the cleanliness of their classrooms and through recycling projects. The school organizes a wide variety of Community Involvement Programmes for students to practise values and skills learnt.

We are glad to report that our school has attained the Character Development Award in 2009.

Enhancing Teacher-Pupil Relationship

From Year 2010, your child/ward will go through the Form Teacher Guidance Period (FTGP), a 30-minute per week period within the school's curriculum time.

The FTGP is introduced to all primary schools in 2010, in alignment with recommendations by the Primary Education Review and Implementation (PERI) committee.

The central idea and purpose behind FTGP is to provide time within the curriculum for form teachers to engage in quality interactions with their pupils and for them to help pupils strengthen social and emotional competencies.

During FTGP, the following will take place:

  • a) Play activities between the form teacher and pupils so as to build a safe classroom environment for pupils and to enhance bonding between form teacher and pupils
  • b) Teaching of social and emotional competencies

The Pastoral Care Department is committed to creating a nurturing environment based on a culture of love and care so that our pupils will be inspired to demonstrate our school values. Our teachers seek to enhance their relationship with the students through a special Contact Time period between teachers and students which takes place every Thursday morning from 7.20am to 7.50am. Our teachers conduct activities like games, story-telling, show and tell to build relationship with the pupils. This bonding session allows pupils to express themselves and get to know the teachers better. Teachers also conduct one-to-one sessions with pupils to understand their concerns and anxieties. . Our pupils are also engaged in journal writing where they share their feelings and thoughts with their teachers.

Enrichment Programmes

Workshops are organized for all P5 & P6 pupils with the aim of inculcating lifeskills, good study habits and staying focused to achieve their goals. The P3 pupils will be having workshops on conflict management and building positive relationships while the P4 pupils will undergo Social Etiquette workshop.  The school counselor will be looking into talks for our P1 and P2 students based on the needs of the students.

Student Leadership Development

We envision our OLGC girls to be a PROACTIVE leader who takes

  • Pride in herself, her work and school
  • Responsibility in building her character
  • Ownership of her learning and responsibilities
  • Up an ACTIVE role to lead her school and serve her community within and beyond school

The OLGC leader's motto is to serve with Compassion and Humility and to lead with Integrity and Perseverance.

In line with our vision of developing our students to be leaders of the future, we provide opportunities for all our students to assume leadership roles in the classroom and at school level. Our mentoring programmes like the "Adopted Sisters Programme", "Reading Sisters Programme" and the "P1 Buddy Programme" provide opportunities for our students to care for their younger sisters, at the same time creating a warm and caring school culture. Our many Community Involvement Programmes provide another avenue for the girls to practise their social emotional skills and to demonstrate values learnt. Through visits to Homes like St Joseph's Home and Cheshire Home, our students learn to appreciate what they have and also to understand the needs of the elderly and the severely handicapped.

Students are encouraged to initiate projects which help them gain confidence and practise their organisation skills.  5 of our P5 pupils participated in the Friend of Singa Award organized by the Singapore Kindness Movement in term 2. After a training session, our pupils were tasked with designing a series of activities to promote graciousness and kindness in the school. Pupils acted out a skit to promote graciousness and school-wide activities were also organized including a Kindness Quilt done by the teachers and parents. The school is proud to have achieved the bronze award in this first attempt. Another group of students, our Cyberwellness Ambassadors participated in a Camp to promote a bully-free environment. The students organized a mini exhibition and conducted quizzes for their schoolmates at recess. They also put up an Assembly Skit to highlight the dangers of cyber-bullying.
