The English department has embarked on the STELLAR programme for Primary 1 and Primary 2 this year. STELLAR stands for Strategies for English Language Learning and Reading. Through this programme the department hopes to strengthen both language and reading skills as well as promote a positive attitude towards reading in the foundational years through the use of well-established, learner-centred and developmentally appropriate pedagogical approaches using authentic children's literature.

To further enhance the P1 pupils’ skills in answering reading comprehension questions, the P1 English teachers are working on the TLLM Ignite Project which is headed by the SEED Coordinator.

For the upper levels, the English teachers are working on Action Research on Writing for P5 and Philosophy for Children for P4 which is a cluster project.

Differentiated teaching is also carried out. Diagnostic remedial lessons for P4 to P6 are conducted to help pupils to improve on areas of weaknesses. There is also the underachievers programme for P5 & P6 to help pupils to achieve better quality passes.

Public Speaking activities for all levels are now held during preassembly in order to benefit a larger audience as compared to recess time. Pupils will present on the articles in the newspapers or books that they have read.

Enrichment programmes are also organized by the department aimed at developing pupils into confident and eloquent speakers. For P1 and P2, there is Storytelling and for P3, P4 and P5, there is the Toastmasters Programme.

The department has purchased a giant Scrabble board for an entire class of pupils to play and learn new vocabulary words in a fun way.

Drama club will be set up in term 2 to train pupils to put up performances during special occasions in the school such as Awards Night and also for the School’s 50th Anniversary next year.

In order to develop the proficiency of the teachers in teaching the language, teachers have attended the Writing Workshop by Dr Ruth Wong on 25 of February

They will also be attending drama workshops to equip them with drama techniques to teach the language.

The department has continued its tradition of working with parents to develop the potential of our pupils in the language. As such, the department had organized the English Language Sharing Sessions for all parents on 28 of February. The sharing sessions focused on components such as reading comprehension, writing and oral. The sharing sessions were conducted by the English department teachers who shared with parents some strategies they could use to guide their daughters at home.
